The Adventure Cycling Association designs their maps to send you on a safe and scenic route. You can see in the first picture the approximate route of the ACA maps. We looked at it and thought it looked mountainous and cold. We opted for a more direct and flat southern route that shaved off about 100 miles and likely several days (the second picture). It probably cut out a bunch of scenery too. However, 15 mph average fully loaded with gear is pretty awesome too! If memory serves, this is the first time I adjusted my route substantially.
Oh and when I was reading back at this post from 15 years ago it made me want Pizza Hut. Usually we do Dominos, but Pizza Hut was also enjoyable. The little mini Cinnabons were a hit!
